Topic 2: Strategies, Approaches and Techniques

  • Teachers/Volunteers should design sessions to include learners as active participators in sessions in every way possible, rather than passive absorbers of knowledge. One of the best approaches on teaching migrant adults is placing emphasises participatory methods, particularly in relation to planning and setting up activities that focus attention directly on the learner in the classroom and away from the teacher. The teacher acts more as a facilitator, setting up activities throughout the session without playing a central role, while observing and managing active learner participation through pair and group work at the correct level and appropriate pace. Learner-led approaches are intended to build learners’ confidence and create space for them to form a dynamic, supportive community within the classroom, as well as to empower them to play a more active role within the wider community.
